Belcanto Lisbon – 2 Michelin Star Portuguese Experience

With a total of 2 Michelin stars, Belcanto is currently one of the two restaurants within this category in the city of Lisbon. Executive chef and creator Jose Avillez and his dedicated team flawlessly execute a harmonized Portuguese fine dining experience. Belcanto restaurant is a magical place located within the vibrant neighborhood of Chiado. Formerly created as a gentlemen’s club in 1958, this well-known Portuguese jewel forever changed the local restaurant scene. The ambiance is very traditional fine dining with a rustic flare in decor.
Regarding service, the establishment deserves 5 stars on that single element alone. The current menu features two tasting options; as a usual overachiever, I chose the Belcanto menu featuring 12 balanced dishes. Considering the complexity and length of the menu, the preselected wine tasting was a must.
Including 7 choices, it complimented each dish perfectly, although it would’ve been interesting to experience a more extensive selection of wines. My personal favorites were the “2003 Luís Pato “Vinhas Velas,” Bairrada” and the unforgettable “2000 Porta dos Cavaleiros, Dão”. Regarding the meals, The full moon of foie gras and port wine, along with the Portuguese shore prawn with pine nut and creme, was the highlight of my afternoon. The dessert was no exception, featuring 3 dessert and main dessert options. The exotic combination of flavors behind these dishes is mind-blowing.
Takeaway: I had an incredible lunch and memorable afternoon thanks to the team of Belcanto. Although this particular experience is considered one of the priciest in Lisbon, it will be worth every penny if you are a true fine dining aficionado. Reservations are highly recommended since they are famous for locals and tourists alike. If you did not make prior reservations, it might be possible to secure an afternoon, deposit-only reservation online.
